I want to chat about a little technique that’s been a game-changer for my face: double cleansing. If you’re thinking, “Wait, do I really need to wash my face twice?” Stick around, because trust me, it’s worth it.
Picture this: you’ve had a long day, enduring the elements, battling through city grime, maybe even rocking some makeup. Your poor face has been through a lot. That’s where double cleansing comes in to change the game.
First off, let’s talk about why double cleansing is a PM must-do. Throughout the day, your face becomes a magnet for all sorts of nasties – dirt, debris, makeup, oil – you name it. And while a single cleanse might do the trick for surface-level stuff, it’s not always enough to tackle the gunk that’s really settled into your pores.
That’s where the magic of double cleansing comes in. The first cleanse – usually done with an oil-based cleanser – works like a magnet, attracting and breaking down all the stuff that’s clinging onto your skin for dear life. Think of it as sweeping before mopping, picking up the dirt and impurities before doing the actually cleaning.
Your first cleanse you’ll want to use something that won’t strip your skin, so basically nothing with active ingredients in it towards to top of the ingredient list. For example, no salicylic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, etc. Something really gentle. I currently use the PCASkin Daily Cleansing Oil, but I also love the SkinBetter Cleansing Gel. Depending on your skin concern and type, you’ll go in with your more “targeted” cleanser that will address your unique skin.
When using an oil cleanser, I use the slightest amount of water and cleanse for at least 30 seconds.
Once you’ve given your face a good once-over with that oil cleanser, it’s time for round two: your targeted cleanser, cleansing for at least 60 seconds in circular motions. This step is all about getting down to business and giving your skin a thorough clean sweep. With the surface grime out of the way, this second cleanse can really get into the nitty-gritty, leaving your pores feeling squeaky clean and ready to breathe again. No need for any fancy facial tools or wash cloths, as these can be too aggressive and harbor bacteria.
Extra cleansing tips:
+ Use luke warm or cool water, never hot water! This will strip your skin of its natural oils and dry the crap out of your skin.
+ Always dry with a fresh, clean towel. Better yet – a disposable towel like the Clean Skin Club towels. They are biodegradable and do not harbor bacteria like our hand towels.
+ Wash your hands before touching your face
Double cleansing isn’t just about removing makeup or dirt – it’s about setting the stage for the rest of your skincare routine to be able to do it’s job properly. By prepping your skin with a clean canvas, you’re ensuring that those serums and moisturizers aren’t just sitting on top of the dirt or makeup, and can work their magic more effectively.
I get it – adding an extra step to your skincare routine might seem annoying. But trust me when I say that once you start double cleansing, you won’t look back. It’s like giving your face a little spa day every evening, and who doesn’t love that?
So, if you’re ready to take your skincare game to the next level, give double cleansing a whirl. Your pores will thank you, your skin will thank you, and you will most likely see a difference in your skin!
