One of the biggest questions in the world of skincare is, “What order should my skincare routine be in?” Establishing a proper order for your skincare products ensures that each one is as effective as possible. If you’re a little confused about the order you should be using your skincare products—I’ve got you covered. Let’s dive into the step-by-step process.
The first step in any skincare routine should always be cleansing. This step is non-negotiable because it removes all the dirt, oil, and grime that have built up. Choose a cleanser suitable for your skin type—gel cleansers or exfoliating cleansers for oily skin, cream cleansers for dry skin, and a gentle foaming cleanser for combination skin. Also, double cleansing at night will change the skincare game for you. It’s an absolute must in my routine, and it has made all the difference in my skin.
Next up, serums. The trick with serums is to go from thinnest to thickest. This helps so the products can penetrate the skin and soak up all the goodness properly. Most hydrating and protective serums can be put on both morning and night, but just remember: a morning skincare routine should be protecting your skin, and a nighttime skincare routine should be repairing your skin.
Don’t forget about eye cream! The skin around your eyes is delicate and thin, and needs a little extra TLC. Tap a bit of eye cream around your eyes to tackle/prevent dark circles, puffiness, or fine lines.
Now it’s time for moisturizers. This step locks in all the previous layers and keeps your skin soft. Choose a moisturizer that suits your skin type—a light texture for oily skin, a richer cream for dry skin, or a balanced cream for combo skin.
For your morning routine, never skip SPF. Sunscreen is your best defense against harmful UVA & UVB rays, premature aging, and skin cancer. Go for a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 and slather it on as the final step before makeup.
At night, you can skip the SPF and focus on other treatments like retinol. Nighttime is all about repairing and hydration, so make sure your skin gets all the love it needs while you sleep.
Stick to this order, and you’ll make the most out of each product. Consistency is key, so keep up with your routine and tweak it as needed based on how your skin feels. Now that you know what order your skincare routine should be in, you’re all set to achieve that radiant complexion! Happy skincare!
