Think changing your skin for the better has to be time-consuming, expensive, or complicated? If so, we’ve got good news: It doesn’t have to be!
As it turns out, some of the best things you can do for your skin are simple and affordable. With the right knowledge and a little bit of dedication, achieving your #skingoals may be well within reach. To help you out, we’ve compiled a few of our favorite tips and the even better news is that they’re all easy to start implementing ASAP. Here is what you need to know:
An essential step in any skin supporting routine is exfoliating on the regular. Incorporating some form of gentle exfoliation to remove build up of dead skin and other surface debris can do a lot to prevent pesky breakouts and premature aging, as well as promote a healthy glow. For getting exfoliation right, we recommended using an enzyme, alpha-hydroxy acid, or beta-hydroxy acid-based product. Additionally, it’s important to note that you only need to perform these types of treatments about 1-3x per week to avoid irritating, overdrying, or damaging your skin.
Do you treat your skin to both water and oil-based products daily? If not, you might be missing out on the benefits of these seemingly simple but game-changing components. Because the skin is largely made up of water and oils (called lipids), maintaining proper hydration and moisture levels in the skin is what will allow it to complete important functions including cellular turnover and repair. Just like you nourish your body by drinking plenty of H20 and eating healthy fats, your skin needs both to perform at optimal levels.
When it comes to choosing active ingredients that will actually change your skin for the better, you can’t go wrong with antioxidants. Found in concentrated serums, masks, and other daily formulas, they’re a must for keeping your complexion happy, healthy, and youthful. Vitamin C for example, helps to combat signs of aging by promoting collagen production and radiant skin, while Vitamin E can help to strengthen the skin and protect it against environmental stressors. Additionally, Vitamin A (also sometimes known as retinol) is a super ingredient for targeting signs of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, dull skin and more.
Another important truth about skin care is that without proper sun protection, all of your other efforts to treat your skin may be ineffective. Because the sun’s damaging UVA and UVB rays are one of the leading causes of many skin issues – from sun spots to skin cancer – keeping it safeguarded with an SPF of 30 or more is a must. For best results, we recommend finding a sunscreen that you love that feels good on your skin and applying generously every single day (Yes, even when it’s cold or cloudy). You’ll also need to reapply every two hours any time that you are being exposed to the sun.
Of course, one last thing that’s worth bearing in mind is that true skin transformation takes time. On average, your skin requires at least 28 days or about four weeks to complete one full turnover cycle, so for seeing positive changes, think progress over perfection, and remember to stay the course. Rather than constantly trying new things or seeking quick fixes, you’ll get better results from choosing just a few high quality products and using them daily. Although this can require a little patience on your part, we promise that the results are so worth it.
